How To Report A Product Safety Issue

Consumer protection laws like the EU’s General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) help ensure that you know where a product was manufactured, and give you the ability to report product safety issues. Everyone has the right to purchase safe products online.

What is a “safe product”?

A safe product, whether new or pre-owned, is one that does not present any unnecessary risk to your health or physical well-being when the product is used in a normal or reasonably foreseeable way.

Even intact music media can have sharp edges, especially around the outer rim of vinyl records or CDs, that requires reasonable care in handling to avoid cuts. Older physical music media may require greater care when handling as the materials may be worn and more subject to breakage by repeat use.

Consumers are encouraged to consider the age and condition when handling physical music media and take reasonable precautions to protect themselves.

What is an “unsafe product”?

As a consumer, you have the right to report a product safety issue. Specific to Discogs, an example of an unsafe product that would constitute a reportable product safety issues is:

  • Poorly manufactured products that are brittle or have unexpected/unreasonable hazards (e.g., extremely easily cracked records, cassettes, CDs, cases, etc.)

What isn’t considered an “unsafe product”?

The following are examples of what is not a reportable product safety issue:

  • Grading/media quality disputes (e.g., disagreement about scratches, playback, surface noise, etc.)
  • Damage incurred during storage or shipping (e.g., breakage, warping, scratches, damaged cases/sleeves, etc.)
  • Incorrect items delivered from the seller.
  • Damage incurred by the consumer due to their own mishandling (e.g., broken materials due to dropping or incorrect storage, etc.)
